To receive salvation we must do what is written in Romans 10:9-10, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt beleive in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart of man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Acts 16:31 records these words, And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. This gift cannot be earned through good deeds or by simply being a good person. It is a matter of faith. The gospel also offers you a promise, to save you from the penalty of sin; we must believe it.
