Sam Haile – Jugs made at Bulmer Sam Haile was born in London and, after working in a shipping firm and taking art evening classes, studied at the Royal College of Art (1931-4). He originally studied painting but moved to the pottery department under William Staite Murray. He also met and subsequently married the textile design student, now potter, Marianne de Trey. From 1936 Haile taught briefly at Hammersmith and Kingston art schools and shared a studio in Raynes Park, Wimbledon with Margaret Rey. Here he produced slipware and stoneware, having his first solo exhibition in 1937. After a period of teaching and potting in the United States at Ann Arbor College (1939-43), he enlisted in the British Army. At the end of the war he and his wife shared a studio in Suffolk, moving to Shinners Bridge, Dartington, Devon (Bernard Leachs former workshop) in 1946. At this time he also worked for the Rural Industries Bureau as pottery advisor. He died as the result of a road traffic accident in 1948.
