Sam Harris. Ill give a speech that is entirely lifted from Buddhist doctrine, scripture and teaching, then Ill say that Buddhism is part of the problem. Of course, what he is saying here is essentially what the Buddha, and every Zen Master has been saying since the beginning. If you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha said Rinzai. One of my teachers used to often say, it makes me sad that when Buddhism came to America, it was lumped together with Religion. Generally, I like what Sam Harris says - honestly though, its mostly just hearing a scientist just using his scientific mind to affirm what has been taught for 2.5 thousand years. That said, I am getting tired with him paraphrasing what has been said for 2500 years, and passing it off as if he just discovered it. So, why do I think that Buddhism or Zen or any of it is important? Well, here let me give an example. When dealing with humans, it is generally understood that eating a balanced diet with plenty of exercise leads to a healthy body and less suffering. Is that knowledge enough for everyone to start? No it is not. Can you create one approach that will motivate all the humans to start? Evidence seems to say no. There was a recent study that revealed that most people would rather self administer electric shock than just sit with their own minds. So, you know that meditation is good for you. Great. So you know that it is a tool to cut through the false construct of self. Bully. Look at the brain on this one! One master said, even a child knows this, and yet it is difficult even for an old man to practice it. So, Sam, now that you have newly discovered what millions have known for ages, how will you step off of that 100 foot pole? How is your big brain going to benefit the human beings and the world around you? I see the answer. I see where he is going. Learn Meditation with Sam Harris. Mark my words. He is also in the religion business, and he is too smart not to know it. Welcome Rev. Harris.
