Sam Harris has awarded someone $2000 for writing an essay refuting the central thesis of his 2010 bestseller -- The Moral Landscape. The book advocates a science of morality by arguing that human values can be determined through the empirical process. Harris circumvents the ought/is value problem by presupposing certain evaluative axioms (a consequentialist-utilitarian mélange) which he asserts are intrinsic to our moral framework. Ryan Born, in his persuasive essay, counters this assertion by poking holes in Harris axiomatic formulations. Grounding morality in empiricism is as tenuous as basing it on divine command. Borns essay doubles as a rebuttal to philosophy-skeptics, Lawrence Krauss and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Three birds, one stone.
