Sam Mertes, you cant stop him you can only hope to contain him as he led the 1904 Giants over the 1909 Tigers 5 games to 1 in the second series of the Grand Tournament. Mertes had 9 hits including 2 homeruns (both in same game) as Mertes could not be stopped with runners on base. Ty Cobb of the Tigers was not the star as he was held to 4 hits and 1 home run. The star for the Tigers was first baseman Tom Jones (the ballplayer not the singer) with 7 hits. One thing that the dead ball era is bringing home is that everyone seems to be able to steal bases but are not that successful and are thrown out a lot. I play the basic game, but the 1904 Giants had 13 steals out of 20 attempts (in 6 games remember), while the Tigers had 10 steals in 16 attempts. Look at the steal allowance numbers or baseball reference website to see all the caught steals. Now you may ask me how I got 13 caught steals in only 6 basic games if you are interested as my posts is already too long. Sometimes my daughter gets one of my APBA posts as per facebooks goofy sharing of posts. She told me Dad I get these posts sometimes, I never read them, but I checked to see if yours are longer than anyone else on the thread and it always is longer.
