Sama, Dana, Bheda, Danda were the four upayas i.e.four ways to get things done. Where the varnas i.e. Brahmanas, Vaishaya, Khatriyas and Shudras are mentioned below, please note, this is not caste - the most repugnant scam in Indian history, misappropriated by devious and corrupt people to get undeserved privileges and self aggrandizement on the basis of birth - but the real varnas that is a consequence of behaviour and actions alone. You are not born as anything, what you do in life gives you your varna. Sama is good words. Usually sama is used on Brahmanas. They understand and accept the truth even if it is adverse to personal interest, for the greater good. Dana is giving something. Usually dana is used on Vaishyas. The king gives some land or privileges to motivate them to work. Bheda is threats and warnings. Bheda is used on Shudras. They are not intelligent or greedy but impulsive and boorish. Money is eventually wasted on them, so fear of dire consequences needs to be used. Dhanda is mainly physical punishment.This is used on Kshatriyas, for they cannot be persuaded with words, influenced by money or threatened to comply. They need to be fought against violently and put to death. Usually sama dana bheda dhanda is used in succession till results are seen. If one were to look at todays politicians they follow these upayas too. With a cunning difference! Interests are personal of course. Sama - sweet and grand promises made before elections to the people. Dana - money used for vote banks or by giving reservations and permissions or dana given to themselves by looting with both hands in the till all the time. Bheda - Frightening people and making money through several corrupt practices. Dhanda - Punishing by cancelling licences, ordering transfers, falsly imprisoning innocents, neglecting constituencies thereby causing disease and death, being inaccessible and creating helplessness. .
