Samburu Women - Kenya, East Africa The Samburus came from the north, probably from the region of the Nile Valley in Sudan, northwest of Lake Turkana. In their oral histories it is stated that they came from a crater or deep valley somewhere to the north, at a place called Endikir-e-Kerio (the scarp of Kerio). Their original name is Loikop; the Masai called them Samburu. It means Butterflies and refers to their personal adornments. Others claim the name Samburr refers to the traditional leather bag used for carrying meat and honey on their backs. The Samburu dress is so similar to the Maasai that it is hard to distinguish between the two tribes. Both Samburu men and women dress in brightly colored traditional shukas, which they wrap loosely around their bodies. Samburu men also dye their hair with red ochre, while the women adorn themselves in beautiful, multi-beaded necklaces and other traditional jewelry.
