Samburu criteria for naming places: Places are named after - 1. a feature eg Maralals original name was Naimarral (glittering) because there was one iron roofed house seen glittering from all raised corners around Maralal 2. some happening/ incident eg Loogor-ate 3. inhabitant (s) of an area e.g Loolkunono (blacksmiths) 4. its geographic physical nature e.g Sirata (patch), Ang!ata Nanyokie (red plains), Ndonyio Wuasin 5. climatic condition e.g Nairobi (cold), Nyahururu (Naiwurruwurr- Falls) 6. dominant tree species e.g Sanankurri, Ngilai 7. Rivers - Narok ( Nkare Narok), Nanyuki ( Nkare Nanyokie) 8. Wildlife- eg Loolosowuani (buffaloes). Loolkanchawo (elephants) 9. a person - Archers, Lekurru ...... add other ways of naming places ...
