Sami Ramadani remains as one-dimensional on Syria as ever. - TopicsExpress

Sami Ramadani remains as one-dimensional on Syria as ever. However, this bit about Iraq rang true: Despite popular myths, the majority of Baath party founders were Shia. However, Iraqi Baathist ideology always had a racist dimension against the Kurdish people and non-Arabs – as well as a class orientation, when in power, that marginalised millions in the poorest sections of society, mostly in the south. Southern Iraq and some areas of Baghdad, populated by mostly Shia migrants from southern rural areas, have historically been home to the poorest people. Or in other words, the Saddam regimes sectarianism was a manifestation of its anti-working class ideology. Whereas the current Maliki regime is much more straightforwardly sectarian, something that Ramadani has much less to say about.
