Sample of the week! Host: Wide Range Pathogen: Xylella fastidiosa Disease: Bacterial Leaf Scorch The bacterium Xylella fastidiosa is the causal agent of Bacterial Leaf Scorch (or Pierce’s Disease in grapes) and covers a variety of hosts, including but not limited to Cedar Elm, Ash, Oleander, Sycamore, Maple, Mountain Laurel, Gingko, and a wide range of Oak species. Xylella thrives in the vascular tissue of the host by slowly clogging the main water transportation vessels and eventually killing the plant. Since this is a systemic pathogen, the symptoms appear gradually and leaves usually remain attached. Generalized leaf bronzing and scorching from the outside in, or from the margin to the midrib, is typically our first clue pointing toward Bacterial Leaf Scorch, and an ELISA-based test can confirm the presence of the pathogen. The pictures shown are all samples that have been submitted to the lab and confirmed to be positive. Unfortunately, there is no cure or treatment option proven to recover the host. There are antibiotic options that can reduce symptoms, however, plant death is eventually inevitable. The pathogen is transferred by xylem-sap feeding insects, specifically Sharpshooters (Leafhoppers), as well as by root grafting. Photos in order: Ash, Cedar Elm (2), Mountain Laurel, Oleander, Privet, Red Oak (3), and a sharpshooter! Have a great weekend! -BC
