Samuel Magill Praised by the New York Times in 2010 for his unimpeachable reading of the Poulenc Cello Sonata, Cellist Samuel Magill has had a rich and varied career as soloist and chamber musician. His first Naxos CD of the Cello Concerto by Vernon Duke was hailed as flat-out magnificent by the American Record Guide, while The Strad wrote in 2010 of his world premier recording of Franco Alfanos Cello Sonata Magills husky, dark timbre matches the Cello Sonatas yearning intensity to perfection. That CD was named as one of the Ten Best Recordings of 2009 by synaphai. Mr. Magill has appeared as soloist throughout Japan and the U.S., including performances of the Schumann Concerto and the Brahms Double Concerto in Tokyos famed Suntory Hall and in Lincoln Centers Alice Tully Hall. He has partnered with the pianists Oxana Yablonskaya, Pascal Rogé and the late Grant Johannesen, and has given annual recitals since 1994 at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. He is a co-founder, with Flutist Lucian Rinando, of The Elysian Ensemble, a Flute, Cello and Harp trio. They made their New York debut at Weill Recital Hall to critical acclaim. Strings Magazine declared them masters of their instruments. Mr Magill was educated at the Peabody Institute. He is a former member of the Houston Symphony and the Pittsburgh Symphony, and was Artist in Residence at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. He is currently a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York, and was formerly the Associate Principal Cello for 7 seasons. For 9 summers he served as Principal Cello and Soloist of the New York Symphonic Ensemble. As such he toured throughout Japan performing the Concerti of Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saëns, Dvorak, Dohnanyi, Schumann, Brahms and Beethoven. Both the Tchaikovsky and Dohnanyi works were recorded for CD by the Panasonic Corporation. Mr. Magill can be soon heard on several new CDs in 2012. For the Centaur label he recorded the 2010 Cello Sonata by Andrew Rudin with pianist Beth Levin, a world premier CD of the music of René de Castéra on the Azur label and two CDs on the new Urlicht label, one of which pairs the Korngold Suite for Piano Quartet with the Rhapsodie-Quartett by Joseph Marx. Both discs feature the New York Piano Quartet, the Ensemble in Residence at the New York Chamber Music Festival at Symphony Space each September.
