Samuel’s Story: “Samuel! Samuel!” [1 Samuel 3]. God knows your name and mine – astonishing! God spoke one word to call this boy set apart to Him. It reminds me of the beautiful interaction in John 20: 16. The Lord said, “Mary!” and Mary replied, “Rabboni!” (my great Master). Out of teeming millions who love Him, the Great Shepherd knows His sheep, including you and me, personally by name. Praise His holy Name! However, we have to acknowledge the extent of the failure of spiritual leadership as set out in these verses. It illustrates why Samuel was desperately needed. Unfortunately, Eli’s spiritual condition mirrored his physical [2]. It took him three occasions to determine that God was calling Samuel, “THEN Eli perceived that the Lord had called the boy” [8]. Eli spent little time in dismissing Samuel [5]. He surely knew Samuel well enough to realize right away that there was something unusual taking place but discernment was missing.
