Sanno Matsuri. This is the first of several videos (yikes, but theyre all very short). Turn on your sound and select HD. About 300 people dressed in ancient costumes parade through the heart of Tokyo in June in even-numbered years. Consisting of mikoshi (portable shrines) adorned with a phoenix on the roof, dashi floats, people carrying drums, people on horseback, the procession departs from Hie-jinja Shrine at 8 AM and does not return to the shrine until early in the evening. Look for the Google map Im posting (hopefully below). We stood on the steps (red arrow) to watch this parade wind its way (yellow arrows) to the Hie-jinja Shrine at the top of the hill (aqua roofs).
