Subject: Celebration of Sanskrit Week in the schools affiliated to CBSE Dear Principal, The Central Board of Secondary Education is committed towards promoting the teaching and learning of Sanskrit – „the mother of all languages‟. Sanskrit and Indian culture are intertwined as most of the indigenous knowledge is available in this language. In its endeavor to promote Sanskrit, the schools affiliated to CBSE may celebrate Sanskrit Week in an experiential manner by conducting activities connected to the real world. The objective of celebrating Sanskrit Week may be to provide an opportunity to schools, teachers and students to come out, share their knowledge of Sanskrit and learn it from each other. The celebration of this week would provide a medium for popularizing Sanskrit and stimulating interest in it by increasing awareness about the close relationship between Sanskrit and other languages and cultural heritage of India. The Sanskrit Week in schools may encourage linguistic creativity among students and to provide an opportunity to benefit from the systematic structure of Sanskrit language that may be transferred in giving insights into all language learning. The schools affiliated to CBSE may commence the conduct of the Sanskrit related activities in July, 2014. Next, they may send their entries to CBSE for the selection at national level latest by July 20, 2014. The schools may organize many activities during the Sanskrit Week which will be celebrated and conducted during August 7, 2014 till August 13, 2014. Activities suggested for students, teachers and schools are as follows: A. National Level Competitions for Students I. For Students: i. Laghubhashnam (Short Speech) (Classes IX-XII) –Individual students may record short speech of 2 minutes on a topic of interest in Sanskrit. At the start of the clip, student must tell his name, class and name of the school with address and contact details (cell phone, e mail Id) (10 seconds).This time will not be included in the actual time of the clip. After ensuring the proper audio-visual quality, students may share their clip on „WhatsApp‟ with the number „07042745234’latest by July 20, 2014. ii. Developing Apps and Games for Sanskrit Learning – This is to promote the creative skills of students who may use their computing skills in association with Sanskrit language to develop Apps/games based on enhancing vocabulary, learning numbers and short phrases. As the activity is of the particular interest of present age students, it would promote the use of technology in learning. iii. Kavita Rachana (Open for all classes) – Schools may encourage students to compose short Sanskrit poems on different themes. The school then selects the best poem composed and send it to the Board with complete detail ( Name of the student, class, Name of the school, Complete Address, Contact details ,Mobile, E mail Id etc.). iv. Essay Competition on themes related to Sanskrit (For classes IX –XII) - The School may conduct the Essay Competition on themes related to Sanskrit. The essay must be original and should relate to a topic important for promotion of Sanskrit or Modern Indian Languages, Indian Art and Culture, Interlinking of Sanskrit with other Modern Indian Languages or other allied topics. The essay must be neatly typed in Sanskrit and should not exceed 500 words. v. Sanskrit Shloka Antyakshari (For classes VI - VIII) - Schools may organize recitation competition for these classes by employing various interesting methods such as Shloka Antyakshari. School may decide to organize this competition in an age appropriate manner for various classes and may invite eminent Sanskrit scholars as jury for the final level function to be held in the school. II. For Teachers Establishing links of Sanskrit with Modern Indian Languages (including languages in the 8th schedule of the Constitution of India) and International languages. Teachers may be asked to carry out action research on establishing links/genesis of any of the above mentioned languages with Sanskrit. The schools may send details of their research with the findings to the Board for the national level event. III. For Schools Recording of Sanskrit related activities for uploading on the CBSE website – Schools may record above mentioned and other Sanskrit related activities conducted at schools level and send clippings of their best event to CBSE for uploading. The clipping must not exceed the time limit of 5 minutes and must be in .MOV/.MPEG4/.AVI/.WMV formats. The clipping for this purpose must be well edited and appropriately titled. Name of the video should be in the following format: “Theme – Title of the video – Name of the School”. The videos may be uploaded on „Google Drive‟ and shared with sanskritcbse@gmail The schools may send the details of their performance/performer in above competitions along with appropriate material in each of the above mentioned six events to Sanskrit Week Celebration, Joint Director(AHA), Central Board of Secondary Education, Shiksha Sadan,17,Institutional Area, Rouse Avenue, Delhi 110002 not later than July 20, 2014.The envelop must mention the name of the competition and the name of the CBSE region under which the sender school falls .The video recordings, if any, may be uploaded on ‘Google Drive’ and shared with the sanskritcbse@gmail (Schools may first download the Google Drive on their system and then upload and share it with the mentioned ID) Expert committees comprising of Sanskrit scholars and other professionals drawn from respective appropriate fields at CBSE will then select the best 30 entries e.g. top three entries in ten regions of the Board in above four categories for students and one category each for teachers and schools for the national level event to be organized in August on a date to be announced shortly. The best entries in each category will be suitably rewarded and certificates may be awarded to students/teams at the national event to be organized by the Board. B. School Level Competitions for Students to be conducted during 07- 13, August, 2014 I. For Students: i. Organization of Yuva Sansad on Sanskrit Promotion-This activity aims to strengthen the oratory acumen of students and they would learn to seek clarifications to various questions related to learning of Sanskrit and suggest possible solutions. Age appropriate competition may be organized in this event. ii. Linking of Sanskrit with Modern Indian Languages (including languages in the 8th schedule of the Constitution of India) and International languages. Students from Senior Secondary classes may be motivated to carry out action research on establishing links/genesis of any of the above mentioned languages with the Sanskrit. II. For Teachers Seminar on practical applications of simple Sanskrit The seminar may be conducted by various Sahodaya chapters for the teachers. The teachers may write papers and present their views on promoting practical applications of Sanskrit in schools. Noted Sanskrit scholars may be invited to these seminars to discuss strategies for promoting interest in Sanskrit in youth. Seminar may conclude with some resolutions and recommendations for schools. The video recordings/ details of this seminar may be uploaded on „Google Drive‟ and shared with the specific e-mail for inclusion in CENBOSEC. III. For Schools i. Screening of a Sanskrit film –Schools may screen a Sanskrit film e.g. Adi Shankarcharya, Bhagvad Gita-the Song of the Lord, Mudrarakshasa etc. with subtitles in Hindi/English in the school auditorium. ii. Interaction of Children with eminent personalities/scholars Sanskrit literature-Schools may invite eminent Sanskrit scholars and children may interact with these scholars. The discussion may focus on how to increase interest in the promotion of daily use of Sanskrit. The schools may prepare a detailed report regarding aforesaid school level activities and send it to the CBSE latest by 31.08.2014. The details regarding national level event to be organized by CBSE in New Delhi may be shortly conveyed through CBSE website cbseacademic.in.
