Santa Anita > Santa Monica Stakes 7 furlongs Grade 2 Monday 011915 > purse 200K The Santa Monica Stakes has been around for a while – In its elder manifestations it was a G3 event and a Handicap race; famous Gamely, won it in 1969 and Face The Facts, earlier in that decade- the very fast Grenzen, under Pincay, Jr. was a smart winner and Shoemaker, Bill won the race numerous times back in the “day” Past Forgetting & Flack Flack &Table Mate, among his phalanx of winning rides- this year the race feature an unbeaten filly Dancinthenightaway, a California bred daughter of the late Indian Charlie - the latter was a Kentucky Derby favorite – and I believe it was a Baffert trainee- Unbeaten following a Santa Anita Derby win- Indian Charlie, lost his only and last race in the 1998 run for the roses- he became a stalwart sire and then came to a tragic end when he awoke with a rare form of equine Cancer and summarily died- Dancinthenightaway, has a very fine broodmare sire array atop her strand of the excellent 13-C broodmare generator- General Meeting, by Seattle Slew>Mr. Prospector>Northern Dancer>Forli, sire to Forego, and the 5th dam Arkadina, (1969) is a lass by world shaking unbeaten Ribot, thru an assignation with tip top matron Natashka, by hard as nails to beat Dedicate- The numbers reveal dosage > 7-1-8-0-0 with a index of 3.00 and a CED (center of distribution) 0.94 indicative of a horse who might like the first mile the best- the WBH9GCF comes to >>Blue Larkspur (9) & Mahmoud (5) & Princequillo (4) & War Admiral (2) = “20” nothing requiring revival from a physician- but she is unbeaten and inbred to Raise a Native, and Northern Dancer, and perhaps Nashua, as well- the conduit mare if I have some grasp of Mr. Lapthorp’s “werke” is Mr. Boussac mega-mare Frizette, one of the historical landmarks of the breeding books and she too came to a grim end when Mr. Boussac decided to sell her to the butchers and she was served to the starving French peasantry- although some say the Kaiser’s troops devoured her when the winter had starved them to near cannibalism- Seattle Slew, and Mr. Prospector, and Kalithea have all stepped off the 13-C express to thunderous applause and achievements- and it would seem as good as time as any to have a mating session with 2014 Horse of the Year and champion 3yo colt California Chrome, and the equally handsome Animal Kingdom- as for a guest star stallion I’ve invited Ashford Stud newbie Declaration of War, 3rd in a recent Breeders Cup Classic- so without further proclamations let’s see how they stack up with thus far unbeaten Dancinthenightaway- California Chrome x Dancinthenightaway x Indian Charlie = first I look at the Wbh9GCF whenever California Chrome, steps inside the mating ring- here the number is a whopping “38” – one might conjecture that California Chrome’s progeny will have hearts the size of microwave ovens! The CD for this foal hypothetical chimes in at 0.75- which may be interpreted as 9 furlongs is a reachable goal- but I like that Seattle Slew, is a 13-C and the mare is a 13-C and Mr. Prospector, is a 13-C and Gold Digger, is a 13-C and Siberian Express, is a 13-C and My Charmer, is a 13-C and Sequence, is a 13-C- this foal if it was a “reality” might be very quick- Animal Kingdom x Dancinthenightaway x Indian Charlie = a excellent intermingling of the 3 great imported sires: Lyphard, and Caro, and Blushing Groom – they may have all stood at Gainesway Farm at the same time if I remember my blood-horse advertisements correctly- and in my lonely assessments, the inculcating of the above 3 stallions within 5 generations of a pedigree makes the chances of getting a “good” one out of a nuptial better than average- the CD figure is high 1.00 further indicative that Animal Kingdom, when given the right sort of mare, may be a “special” sire of speed particularly on the Turf- Our guest stud is handsome Declaration of War x Dancinthenightaway x Indian Charlie- = before we allocate numbers, a note is that Declaration of War, may have a half sister of Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags, as his grandma? Anyway; the WBH9GCF in this hypothetical is > Blue larkspur (7) & Mahmoud (9) & Princequillo (7) & War Admiral (2?) “25” (please excuse my word program is really horrible) - with a 40K stud fee Declaration of War, seems a plain box of candy wrapped up with a fancy ribbon- but then again his 4th dam is Glad Rags, by top drawer High Hat- the sire to dam ratio is a neat 13-b/13-c- a pleasing sight to these nearly sightless eyes- interestingly the conduit mare for War Front, sire of Declaration of War, was Artless, sister to famed Artful- seems like the lesser sister in racing performance turned out to be a better “conduit” to the future than Artful was- Artful, was the only equine to beat Sysonby, one of the greatest runners of the 20th century, who knows how good she may have been as legend has it that her connections had her restrained by the rider in order to allow her stable mates to score a win in the only 2 races she was beaten (she ran 2nd in those dubious outings) both Artful and Artless, were stalwarts of the famed 4-R family whose greatest recent exposition is Zenyatta. h/
