Santa Fe Police Launch Operation Grinch SANTA FE, N.M. – Santa Fe Police want to ensure the criminals don’t steal your holiday happiness. The department will launch ‘Operation Grinch’ at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving. For the first time, Santa Fe Police will deploy five traffic safety signs warning criminals police are in the area and watching for illegal activity. Bait items, which will include cars and electronics, will also be deployed throughout the city in an effort to help catch thieves. Additional patrol, plain clothes and undercover officers will also be working in various capacities. They will be inside stores searching for shoplifters, patrolling neighborhoods preventing burglaries and scouring parking lots to ensure safety. Residents may also notice informative cards placed on their vehicle windows. These are the result of courtesy patrols. Officers will note vulnerabilities such as unlocked car doors, unrolled windows, open trunks and presents left in plain sight making them an easy target for crooks. Along with the cards, officers will also hand out brand new ‘Holiday Safety’ pamphlets which include burglary prevention, online shopping safety and parking lot safety tips. Flyers can be picked up at the Police Department and various retailers. Santa Fe Police Chief Eric Garcia would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. The operation will run through December 28, 2014.
