Santa Monica cable subscribers in the 70s and 80s lucky enough to have the Z Channel had the best movie channel ever, and they knew it. Programmed by movie lover Jerry Harvey, his deep passion for great films was reflected in the superb selection of current, classic and foreign films. The Z channel was so much respected in the movie industry that many of the films in contention for Academy Awards were shown before the nomination process was completed. Without a doubt, the Z channel audience, which also covered Beverly Hills, Studio City, Encino, Sherman Oaks and Pacific Palisades, included many of the movers and shakers in the industry and was undoubtedly a major factor in those films getting nominated and even winning an Oscar.
