*Sappy, career-related wall of text incoming* In April, I - TopicsExpress

*Sappy, career-related wall of text incoming* In April, I wrote a story after months of investigation about how the school system in Isle of Wight County had underpaid hundreds of construction workers on a school construction job. The schools failed to include federal wage provisions in its construction contract and many workers got paid at an hourly rate well below the federal minimum for federally-supported jobs. These are guys who work long, hard hours for not a lot of money and are struggling to support families and pay bills. Some told me they were owed upwards of $20,000, which is a ton of money for any normal person. Now, the countys school system has approved an order that says it will pay up to cover the difference between federally mandated wages and what those folks got paid. Satisfaction and closure in this business can be hard to come by.This story from tomorrows paper represents the reason I took this job - not just the investigation unearthing the issue, but the end result helping people out in a real, direct way. dailypress/news/isle-of-wight-county/dp-nws-isle-wight-schools-backpay-20141126-story.html
