Saracens Cricket Club Horse Racing and Sponsors Night Last Friday night the Saracens Cricket Club held a horse racing night where the sponsors were invited for drinks and to bet on pre-recorded races in the UK at the Marton Rugby Clubrooms. It was a great turn out by most of the sponsors and by the players as well as others who wanted a fun night out. Since most of the races were close there was a great deal of noise especially when a horse fell at a fence. The highlight was the Sponsors’ Race where each of the 21 sponsors was assigned a horse and the winner got the naming rights to the B Team. Matt Burke from Matt Burke Engineering horse won. Since Matt Burke Engineering already has a more than generous sponsorship deal with the Premier side Matt Burke magnanimously allowed the naming rights to go to auction. Some cynics might say that Matt didn’t want his firm to be associated with such broken down crocks such as Pondie, Steve Lewis and Tom Walker which does make a lot of sense really. In reality it was an extremely generous and greatly appreciated move by Matt to give the club the opportunity to raise further money. Blair Robinson representing Stephen Harris Livestock then ran a lively auction. As the bidding got higher, Linky couldn’t resist being with the heavyweights (it’s one of his aberrations), bidding on behalf of James Rook (much to his consternation) of Rangitikei Truck and Diesel. RTD now have the naming rights the B Team. Thanks from the B Team to Matt Holden from Matt Holden Building for his great sponsorship and support from last year. After expenses were taken out the Saracens made over $3,300. Special thanks to our sponsors, Cooks Bar and Café, Cobhams Plumbing, Alf Downs, Farmlands, BJW Motors, Rayner Building, Matt Holden Building, PJ Rayner Decorating, The Club Hotel, Matt Burke Engineering, AC Painting, Graham Marshall Decorating, Evans Henderson Woodbridge, The Marton Hotel, Dan Fairburn Tiling, Hogans Plumbing, Blair Robinson of Stephen Harris Livestock, Rangitikei Truck & Diesel, Active Physio, ITM Rural Timber and Orlando Country. Thanks to Bruce Galpin from the Marton Rugby Club for running the bar, the Saracens Committee and the people who did the food. The night was hugely successful not only because of the money raised but by all the people who participated in the evening. This week the Matt Burke Engineering Premiers play Tech here in Marton. The Rangitikei Truck & Diesel Bs play Taihape in Taihape.
