Sarah Pratt-Spangler tells me that Im No. 11, meaning that I should share 11 things about myself that few people know. Here goes: I. My father was in the U.S. Army, so I spent a lot of my childhood traveling with my family. It took a long time for me to feel like I could put roots down. 2. I experienced my first solar eclipse when I was in elementary school in North Carolina. Freaky and exciting! Also, my school was closed one day after someone tried to break into it by breaking a large glass window. The culprit cut himself and bled on the broken glass. That was extremely traumatic and unsettling for me. 3. When Dane and I first met each other, there was absolutely no chemistry between us. Today, I couldnt imagine a happy, fulfilling life without him. 4. My two oldest children were born in Vicenza, Italy, by C-section. My two youngest were born naturally in Lansing, Mich. 5. In high school, I cheered for the Kubasaki High School Falcons, one of four intramural teams. The words to our fight song went, Mighty Falcons, mighty Falcons, colors blue and white. We will fight with all our might to win this game tonight. Mighty Falcons, were all behind you, with you all the way! Go Falcons, beat the [Knights, Warriors, Eagles], win this game! It was sung to the tune of On Wisconsin. 6. Bruce Lees martial arts style was Jeet Kun Do (kung fu). I studied it for many years, and only had to use it to defend myself once. 7. I would love to open a ramenya/izakaya … maybe when I retire. 8. When I lived in Italy, I auditioned for a role in the play, South Pacific. The director suggested I also audition for a movie starring Kathleen Turner and directed by Peter Del Monte (Julia & Julia). They were looking for an Asian to play the role of a babysitter to an American woman (Turner). The casting director took pictures of me and called me back for an actual audition, but Id also just learned that I was pregnant with Hännah. It was just a matter of time before Id start to show, so I bowed out. 9. My parents, brother, sisters, nieces and nephews live in Colorado, and I miss them terribly. 10. My family and I believe that renown artist/writer Yayoi Kusama was cousin to my maternal grandmother (Yoshiko Kusama Sumi), and that some of us inherited her kookiness. 11. I wish Dane never got rid of his Miyata. That ... will just have to be our next car.
