Sarah Rank Something you had posted about ability to see in 3D (or not!) made me think. I wonder what attributes a child gets from his/her parents, as there is no (diagnosed) history of dyspraxia in either of our families. So my son has dyspraxia and has an amazing sense of direction -- he will remember when we were at a place and how to get there, even when he was 3, he was able to point out a place my husband dropped me off one time for a dinner I had to attend. I dont know about his 3D thinking when it comes to directions to assemble things, as we will cross that bridge when we can, but I know that I can look at directions and have ABSOLUTELY no clue how to assemble it. If I look at blueprints or floor designs, I cant picture it. I get disoriented in buildings, and in traffic (even in an area I have been to hundreds of times, if I am driving, I get lost very easily).... wonder if in some sense this is my weakness where directions are strong for my dyspraxic son -- Daddy has a great sense of direction and can find his way around country roads and everything. I mean, I have poor balance, but wouldnt call myself clumsy or anything. But as a kid, I definitely was... makes one wonder! I definitely dont struggle with fine motor, but if I had to pinpoint one thing, it would be directions. Even looking at the stovetop diagram which shows which burner to turn on with the according dot, I have to stare for quite awhile to figure out which knob to turn.. Warren: Here is how this work when one ability is less another ability will kick in. Not seeing in 3d I can look out my window see the Hancock building but not having the eyes and brain and muscles works in harmony it looks close so it must be close. The reality is with Google maps its roughly 1.5 miles away but without checking that I thought it was a 2 minute walk away. So what happens is I will study the route to get to the Hancock Building via google maps watch it on my computer pretend to be the man and then put all that information into my photographic memory and store to navigate. I do this for all new situations but the other week I did not and thus taking a different bus route to get around and walking 2 streets away since I did not have time to plan and study the locations resulted in a meltdown because I did not allocate my mind the time to process and function and put into my photographic memory were I was going and how I would go there as life presents many things that need to be done right now and not with time to plan. It was tough to do so and going into new situations and buildings are exactly the same its not memorized I cant see it and did not practice. My dad with DCD the motor planning issues his struggle is just that how to plan how to navigate his way around things for me its my life how to memorize and master to progress.
