Sarawak DAP furious at ECs redelineation exercise 6 JAN 2015 (Malaysiakini) Sarawak DAP is furious with the way the Election Commission (EC) had handled the delineation exercise in the state which was announced on Monday. “The new delineation exercise has dispelled doubts the EC is helping BN consolidate its position and power base,” said Sarawak DAP Chief Chong Chieng Jen, when commenting on the proposed 11 new state seats for Sarawak. Chong (left), who is the MP for Bandar Kuching, said the new delineation exercise has defied the basic principle of one-person-one-vote-one-value, pointing out that the most glaring anomaly was the Bandar Kuching parliamentary constituency. It was already one of the most populous constituencies (52,000 voters). But with the addition of Batu Lintang state constituency, the number of its voters had increased by another 25,000 to more than 78,000, he said. The Batu Lintang seat was formerly under the Stampin Parliamentary constituency. “However, this attempt on the part of the EC to help BN to win more seats is based on the assumption that the Malay and Dayak voters in the rural area will forever support BN,” he said. But he believed with the coming of the internet age, such an assumption is mistaken as Malay and Dayak communities in the rural areas now have much more access to information. He said that this trend could be seen from the increase in Malay and Dayak support in the urban areas for the opposition. “Therefore, unless BN intends to keep the rural community uninformed of political and economic development in the state and country, the political mindset amongst the rural people will surely change. “Yhe DAP will continue our efforts in the rural areas, to supply information on cronyism and corruption and how they have been deprived them of amenities such as basic infrastructure, reasonable education and medical facilities,” said Chong, who is also the Kota Sentosa state assemblyperson. The 11 seats proposed, which will increase the number of state assembly seats to 82, are N3 Batu Kitang, N17 Stakan, N18 Serumbu, N23 Triboh, N26 Gedong, N40 Kabong, N57 Tellian, N63 Selirik, N66 Murum, N70 Samalaju and N78 Long Lama. malaysiakini/news/285484
