Sardar Patel as hero: The Sangh Pariwar has decided that its best bet is to pretend that Patel was a secret BJP mole within the Congress. It sings the praises of Patel, the imaginary Sangh pariwar mole. It wants to invent a role for itself in the freedom movement, so it now clings to the fiction that Patel was its man. Sardar Patel: BJP is attempting to appropriate Congress’ ‘man of steel Sardar Patel& also trying to forge a link with the freedom struggle where there was none. In a govt. communiqué (Feb.4, 1948) Patel the then Union Home minister, announced the ban on RSS by stating ‘the objectionable& harmful activities of the Sangh have, however, continued unabated& the cult of violence sponsored& inspired by the activities of the Sangh has claimed many victims. The latest& the most precious to fall was Gandhiji himself.’ It was only on July 11,1949 that the ban was withdrawn when the RSS accepted the conditions set by the govt. including that it shall remain a ‘cultural organization’ ‘eschewing secrecy& abjuring violence.’
