***Sarkozy: ‘Recognition of Palestine as State Calls Into Question Security of Israel’*** Former French President Nicholas Sarkozy advised the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) party to oppose a resolution on the recognition of Palestine as a state. At a recent political rally, Sarkozy said, “I will fight for the Palestinians to have their state. But unilateral recognition a few days after a deadly attack and when there is no peace process? No!” Sarkozy was referring to the recent attack in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Har Nof, which resulted in five gruesome deaths, four of who were rabbis: Avraham Goldberg, Kalman Levine, Aryeh Kupinsky, and Moshe Twersky. As a result, Sarkozy said that creating a resolution would be a risk and would “call into question the security of Israel.” Sarkozy said, “This is the fight of my life.” In 2011, according to France 24, Sarkozy told an assembly in New York, “Let us cease our endless debates on the parameters. Let us begin negotiations, and adopt a precise timetable. Must we exclude an intermediate stage?” Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders also said that the Netherlands would not recognize Palestine as a state in the near future. He has iterated that this move would not accomplish peace. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “Do they have nothing better to do at a time of beheadings across the Middle East including that of a French citizen?” Netanyahu was recalling the September beheading of hiker Herve Gourdel, who was captured and executed by jihadists in Algeria. France’s parliament will vote on December 2 whether or not to recognize Palestine as a state. Netanyahu said, “Recognition of a Palestinian state by France would be a grave mistake.” Due to a failure in consensus by lawmakers, the European Parliament delayed a planned voting on the recognition of a Palestinian state by three weeks. According to sources in Israel and Europe, reasons were because the exact wording of the motion was misunderstood.
