Sat 10th Aug Senior Football Championship Aghada 3-14 Ilen Rovers 1-10 Aghada banished the ghosts of the last outing in Ballygarvan when despite having outplayed Clonakilty for most of that game ended up losing. That did not happen this evening when Aghada turned on a powerful display led from the middle of the park by Pearse O’Neill to destroy Ilen Rvs. The Ballygarvan ghost did appear five minutes from the short whistle when the men from the West scored 1-2 in that space of time to level matters 1-5 to 0-8 when the half time whistle sounded. Before that it was all Aghada as Pearse lead by example took over free taking duties as Cian Fleming was rested for discipline matters scoring four minors with two coming from placed balls. Aghada playing with a two man full forward line had Ilen in all sorts of bother as Ronan Kennedy and Josh O’Shea piled on the pressure adding three points between them. Goalkeeper Raymond Savage also got in on the act kicking a long range free. Ilen were too dependent on the short passing game found it hard to make headway against a hard working East Cork outfit and had to rely on Dan McEoin to keep them in touch with two frees and one from play from Corner back Michael Hellen just on the stroke of half time. Aghada tried a short kick out which went wrong and McEoin got on the end of if and rattled the net. A minute later he added a point and suddenly it was level. Aghada used the brake well now playing with the wind behind them started to control things again. Aghada Sub Cian Fleming and Ilen Rvs Corner Forward Jack Bushe burst into life with both scoring three points to leave things level 1-8 to 0-11 as we entered the closing quarter. Aghada unleashed the bench and what a difference it made as John Connolly and John Paul O’Connor had a vital influence on the game with Connolly adding a minor quickly followed by one from Pearse and then from the kick out Aghada burst forward and Josh O’Shea made know mistake and in the space of three minutes Aghada were five points to the good. More was to follow two minutes later the East Cork men were out of sight following a 45m kick from Fleming and a goal from Ronan Kennedy. Ilen dug deep with McEoin adding two frees but Aghada had the last say as Ronan Kennedy finished a great Aghada movement to the net as Aghada sailed into a quarter final meeting with divisional side Carbery Make no mistake this was an accomplished display by the East Cork side who have grown in confidence and self believe since the afore mentioned opening round and had no bother in coping with the five point lost just before half time.
