Sat. & Sun, 11/22-11/23/14 Guggenheim ZERO: Countdown to Tomorrow, 1950s–60s October 10, 2014–January 7, 2015 The first large-scale historical survey in the United States dedicated to the German artists group Zero (1957–66) founded by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene and joined in 1961 by Günther Uecker, and ZERO, an international network of artists from Europe, Japan, and North and South America—including Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama, Piero Manzoni, Almir Mavignier, Jan Schoonhoven, and Jesús Rafael Soto—who shared the group’s aspiration to transform and redefine art in the aftermath of World War II. Screenings: 3 pm Günther Uecker: The Poetry of Destruction A Film by Michael Kluth, 2005, 52 minutes Filmic portrait, filmmaker Michael Kluth gives an overview of Uecker’s life and work. 4 pm All is Light – Jan Henderikse A film by Sherman de Jesus 2001, 53 minutes, Dutch with English subtitles Using quotidian objects as his materials, his film documents the creation of his monumental work Nite Lite, which draws on strategies used by Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol yet reflects Henderikse’s unique and humorous outlook on art and life. Wang Jianwei The Morning Time Disappeared, 2014 Screenings at 1:00 through, 10/31/14-2/16/15 Digital color video with sound, 55 min. Ho Family Foundation Inspired by Franz Kafka’s novella The Metamorphosis (1915), this film explores the transformation of contemporary China and looks at how the boundary between reality and fiction becomes blurred and abstracted. Like Kafka’s novella, the video positions itself in a state of imaginary realism. New Media Theater, lower level, free with museum admission. V. S. Gaitonde: Painting as Process, Painting as Life October 24, 2014–February 11, 2015 Vasudeo Santu Gaitonde (1924–2001) was known to fellow artists and intellectuals, as well as to later generations of students and admirers, as a man of uncompromising integrity of spirit and purpose. Born in Nagpur, India in 1924, Gaitonde was briefly affiliated with avant-garde collectives such as the Progressive Artists’ Group and the Bombay Group in the early ’50s. Nonetheless, he remained independent throughout most of his career.
