Sathya S Chammathil Before documenting the streets and squares - TopicsExpress

Sathya S Chammathil Before documenting the streets and squares from an Indian context, students should know what their culture was like, what kind of public spaces did that society demand? This is purely theoretical. There should be a sense of appreciation towards that way of life (Infact those were our ROOTS). Also the student should be motivated and made aware that reading classic literature in our regional languages is an important step towards understanding architecture. Let me put up a small example: In Landscape Architecture we study about streets, squares, plazas etc; It is easy to say that streets are nothing but veedhi (வீதி ) in tamil. Now where do we find an equivalent for squares or plazas? The answer came from silapathikaram They were known as Sadhukkam (சதுக்கம்). It was not direct though this word was arrived at from the usage of Sadhukka Bhootham (சதுக்க பூதம்). These were nothing but guardian angels of the squares. Such concepts when looked in ancient town planning texts you get to see, that the treatise of MayanMadham says how these squares should be, how to setup based on grids and where should these happen. So this grounding on our literature is very important to understand the sense behind such designs. Also students have to be thought that our designs are very concrete in relationship with nature. But there is a huge abstraction in the IDEAS behind such concrete designs. So a huge step towards useful documentation would be to read and understand our ancient town planning principles like MayanMatam, Shilparatnam, Smaranganasutradhara, Prasadhamandana etc; https://facebook/sathya.chammathil?fref=browse_search
