Saturday 21st March, 1914 C.B. etc. At Inverleith. Saw International, Scotland v. England. Exciting game – mixed play – good & poor. Scotland mucked a good chance - & missed 2 penalties – Will scores – Lowe equalises for England – ½ time 3-3pts. Second half very bright. Huggan scores. Lowe scored several times & things looked bad when the score was 16pts – 6 for England. Bowie dropped a goal & Will after a great run scored right behind. Great excitement & England won by 16pts – 15pts. (2goals, 2 tries – 1 goal, 1 dropped goal, 2 tries). They were the better side Watson (Bunchy) & Poulton, their centres, completing out chasing ours. With a decent full-back * England’s luck, Scotland would have won, however we came well of an exciting game [sic]. England (won 3), Wales (won 2), Ireland (won 1), Scotland (won 0) is the order this year. Huge crowd. Scots team – Wallace (Cambridge & Edinburgh Acies [sic]); Will (Cambridge), Angus (Watsonians), Scobbie (Lower Scotland), Huggan (Lower Scotland, Edinburgh Variety & Jed forest); I Bourie & Milroy (Capt.) Watsonians; - Ross (Varity); Turner (Lopl) [sic]; Lein (Royal High School); Usher (Lower Scotland), Maxwell (Acies), Symington (Caul) [sic], Pender (Lower Scotland), Young (Glasgow Acies) = scrumming order. Wallace = poor; Will = very good, Angus = stuffy defence, tosses a low for Watson, Scobe = poor (not in evedency) [sic], Huggans = too slow off his mark Bowie = did 2 things, ie. dropped a goal & gave Will a pass Milroy = Good Capt. Pauses not very good. Played well. Maxwell, Turner, Ross, Podger = 1st four forwards. Except for 2 tackles by Podger there was not a decent tackle all the game. Kicking too, very poor. Referee (Welsch) not too sticked about ball being in scrum. Out with Jack at night.
