Saturday 23rd August 2014 First race: 2.00pm (Seven Races) Going: Good (straight), good to firm (round course) • The Tom Hogan-trained Gordon Lord Byron heads the field of nine runners for the €60,000 Renaissance Stakes at the Curragh on Saturday. The sprinting star has been a little slow to hit top form in Europe having been brilliantly trained by Hogan to win a Group 1 race in Australia last March. Connections of Gordon Lord Byron will be hoping that Saturday will kick-start his European campaign in the hands of Joseph O’Brien. • Evanna McCutcheon will be another trainer with her fingers crossed, as her Maarek bids to bounce back to winning ways following a rather tame effort here a fortnight ago. Declan McDonogh takes the ride, and, as ever, every drop of rain between now and the race will be a bonus as Maarek is much better on softer ground. • The Ballydoyle inmate The Great War is the only colt among seven runners for the Irish Field Stakes . Aidan O’Brien also has Simply A Star entered in the race and she may have the measure of her stable-mate. Ger Lyons will also unleash recent Naas winner Ainippe, who was subsequently purchased by Qatar Racing following that impressive win. • Legendary broadcaster Gay Byrne and his wife Kathleen will present the prize for the Gay and Kathleen Byrne Celebrating 50 Years of Marriage Handicap at 3.45pm. There is a strong chance that Dublin trainer Ado McGuinness will be the man accepting the prize on behalf of Beau Satchel, the mount of Joseph O’Brien. • The first race on Saturday is off at 2.00pm.
