Saturday 24 January, Leadership Scouting Magazine had a piece a bit ago about what to do to help a kid with Autism. Note: many kids are many places on the autism spectrum , many only express some traits. Now we all know all kids arent the same, each kid has his own interests, his own talents, his own learning speed, his own learning style, his own motivation. It would be dumb to assume that they could all be instructed, motivated, or led exactly the same way. IMHO this is part of the problem in the school system, at least many years ago when I went through. And nobody that knew me then ever accused me of being normal, (actually then or now). Since then I have learned “normal” is just a setting on a washing machine (thanks Ashlee). Anyway Scouting suggests the following to help a kid with Autism issues: • Provide consistent, predictable structure. Be patient. Allow extra time for activities. • Provide a visual schedule using words and pictures. • Let the Scout know about transitions early by saying, “In five minutes we’ll be ending this activity and starting another.” • Give the Scout information about new activities ahead of time. • Break up tasks into smaller steps. Now here is the kicker: I said that we shouldn’t treat all scouts the same, but it seems to me that all scouts would benefit from these ideas. Read the article for more ideas and information And remember these are often the kids that need scouting the most, I did. I do.
