Saturday 2nd November 1pm String Quartet project – The Virr String Quartet Fourteen miniatures based on a fragment of a string quartet by Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813-1888) in the collection of the British Library - specially written by a wide range of contemporary composers as a gift to the festival and to mark the composer’s 200th birthday. A new work by Michael Finnissy plus miniatures by Susie Self, Joshua Kaye, Neil Luck, Adam de la Cour, Matthew Lee Knowles, Alexander Nikiporenko, Andy Ingamells, Gabriel Keen, Alison Beckett, Gina Fergione, Richard Lannoy, Lisa Reim and Laonikos Psimikakis-Chalkokondylis. 4pm Young people’s concert A free event featuring local instrumental students under the age of sixteen, playing a mix of contemporary and classical works. 7.30 Elena Riu, piano recital Inventions: a programme mixing Bach Inventions with contemporary pieces including works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Rodion Shchedrin and Huw Watkins.
