Saturday 9th & 10th August Club Races by Chris Dando Even the club races for Varuna are getting many monohull sailors on the water for some good racing! There was a good breeze on Saturday and, as often seems the case at the moment, the tide was against the fleet up the windward leg. The key was a good start and some clear wind into the shore, but it was critical to get the tack out to the windward mark right while avoiding the Optimist fleet! Florent showed how to do it and won all three races with good tactics and great windward speed. Chris, Scott and Shin did their best to keep him honest, but slight misjudgments were costly. It was not quick if you missed the windward mark and had to put an extra tack in at the mark against the tide, or especially if you managed to hit the windward mark! Sunday saw a little more wind and slightly less tide. The first race was a classic battle between Chris and Kaan. With places changing on several legs the critical point came at the windward mark with Chris just catching Kaan port and starboard and so getting round the mark with a small lead he held to the end. In next two races, Scott showed just how fast he can really sail. With good starts and by getting to the shore quickly, he took leads early in both and sailed well to finish first in both.
