Saturday Aug 9 June gloom in August, but it’s cool because it’s also muggy and the water is warm. And hey, what’s wrong with banking all of our sunny days for mid-winter? . They’re having a fin fest in Hermosa this weekend. Check out the stage, which is in shape of a – you guessed it - a shark’s gaping, tooth-filled mouth! How clever! As I was passing this thing I kept thinking about all the bad mojo it was conjuring, considering all of the recent real shark sightings. Stay tuned folks. Oh, and by the way, I may not like the mojo but I am planning to head down there this afternoon to check out the festivities. Heard Jimmy Buffet will be playing… . Anyway, so, I give you a brief study of lifeguard towers: Those stoic icons of the beach, each one identified with its own street. Of course we have Longfellow which gets lots of exposure here but also a couple of note: TK. That is the last lifeguard in Hermosa before you hit the Chart House but can anybody tell me what TK means? I cannot figure that one out. 5th Street. I still consider this to be my other “home” tower. We lived on the strand at 518 for four years from 1960 to 1964. It was a good way to start life. I performed my first act of juvenile delinquency under this tower, with, of all people, Brad Logan, who was first best friend. We had found, or maybe Brad had brought a book of matches to the beach, and we ended up under that tower, trying like jayhoo to light those things. And I think we succeeded though not much happened. But it sure was fun. And then there is 10th Street. Today I really liked the 10th Street tower. And why not? . Other stuff – caught a few fun waves in front today, and was able to ride most of them right to up to the wet-sand where I could just hop off my board and start over. Nothing like summer… . And lastly, but not leastly, see Spencer with the official Benoit Over the Seas flyer at Boccatto’s…
