Saturday, August 17 The annual Perseid meteor shower peaked last week, but it remains active until August 24. Although the number of meteors drops to below 10 per hour this weekend, anyone under a dark sky should keep a watch. The best time to view is after the waxing gibbous Moon sets and before morning twilight begins — from about 2:30 to 4:30 a.m. local daylight time this morning and 3:30 to 4:30 a.m. tomorrow morning. To tell whether a meteor is a Perseid or just a random dust particle burning up in Earth’s atmosphere, trace the streak’s path backward in the sky. If it intersects the constellation Perseus, the meteor belongs to the shower.
