Saturday, December 20, 2014: Headed north again to a sugar cane museum. Shweta got us a deal. We waited outside and she went in and spoke to them in Creole. Instead of paying 350 rupees each we only paid 150 as Mauritian residents. Then she said that Ted and I are seniors and we got in even cheaper. So instead of 1400 rupees it cost us 450 rupees. (In Cdn that would be $56 but we only paid $18). Thank you Shweta! It is a massive site and so much history. As you go along you begin to get an awesome history lesson about Mauritius. Gradually it moves into the sugar cane manufacturing processes and a history of that too. Near the end there is also information on the other close by island called Rodrigues. When we finally made it to the gift shop area they had samples of all the kinds of sugar they process there. As you get to the end the colour gets darker and you can taste the molasses more and more. There was also a piece of sugar cane to chew on. Really moist. 1 stalk of cane gives 20 litres of water and 2 kg of sugar. I imagine them working in the fields and cutting open a piece of cane at lunch time to quench thirst. So back to the apartment again. Greg tried several times to get the car up to the speed limit of 110 but only made it once. The rest of the time it was an uphill slope and the car just couldn’t do it. Greg and Shweta head off for dinner with some cousins and Ted and I get to relax. We are tired puppies.
