Saturday, December 20, 2014 Todays Gospel: Lk 1:26-38 Announcement of the Birth of Jesus. Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you. But she was greatly troubled at what was said... Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. Reflection: The CHRISTmas Novena Mass today is called Missa Aurea (Golden Mass), since we celebrate the event that made CHRISTmas possible: Marys yes and her conception of Jesus as the Holy Spirit overshadows her. Her consent, however, spells trouble for Mary. To be pregnant while she is just betrothed, not yet cohabitating with Joseph, makes her an object of gossips. After Jesus is born, Mary as Mother suffers the flight to Egypt, the prophecy of Simeon, the loss of Jesus in the Temple, the departure of Jesus from Nazareth for his public ministry, and the indescribable pains of Jesus passion and death. Mary is not only a gentle, dainty woman; she is also a woman of courage--much like Queen Esther and Judith in the Old Testament. Lifes joys come coupled with inevitable pains. Amen.
