Saturday Devotional - 11/16/13 What You See is What You Get How much time will we spend today wondering and worrying about what others think about us? It has been said that people actually spend less time thinking about us than we think they spend thinking about us, and a whole lot more time thinking about what we think about them than what we really spend thinking about them. And some of us are sure they should be spending more time thinking about us than we think they spend thinking about us. Silly humans! The unfortunate trap in all of this wondering and worrying is that when we are out and about in the world, we have this tendency to try to be more than we are content to be when we know that no one else is watching. We want to appear shinier, prettier, smarter, wealthier, even calmer and in more control; not for ourselves, but for others. Paul, the apostle, would say just the opposite to the believers at Corinth when he states in Second Corinthians 7:2, “Open your hearts to us. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have cheated no one.” Paul might have said, “Look at us, look at everything we have represented ourselves to be in your presence; consider the report of those who have traveled with and labored alongside of us. What you see is what you get!” It was the same heart of genuine love and concern that he spoke to the church at Philippi when he writes, “And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent…” (Philippians 1:9-10) His prayer was that they would grow, not in their own wisdom, but through the knowledge and discernment given by the Author of those gifts. Is there doubting in the church today toward the message, or the Messenger? The question is for all of us. Do we doubt the sincerity? Do we question the outward appearance of this message that is proclaimed as truth? Can we trust with a whole heart? “Open your heart to us,” God calls out through Paul. “Look deeper into Me,” God would urge us. Abound still more and more in the knowledge of God. Seek eyes of discernment that only He can give. As we truly devote this time to Him today in His Word, in prayer, and in fellowship, the excellence of His promises will be revealed. Our wondering and worrying can end. Today, we have another opportunity to open ourselves up to Him completely, to trust the message and the Messenger, and to allow His great love to absolutely abound in our lives.
