Saturday Devotional - 8/31/13 "Strive in Prayer" Music, sports, food, and various hobbies are just a few things that bring about a great unity among people. It’s always interesting to me how simple it is to establish a relationship with someone based off the things that you have in common. On the other hand, there’s always a more rocky start when conversing with a stranger who has nothing in common with you. I have always thought that one of the most miraculous things about being in the body of Christ is the instantaneous connection that occurs between two strangers that share the common bond of salvation through Christ Jesus. Paul said in Second Corinthians 1:11, “…you also helping together in prayer for us, that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the gift granted to us through many.” Paul acknowledged that there is a great unity that takes place when believers gather together to pray with one accord. In the same vein, Paul said in Romans 15:30-31, “Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me, that I may be delivered from those in Judea who do not believe, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints...” I love that Paul talks about striving in prayer because in the Word we are told to pray without ceasing; we should be relentless about our prayer life. As children of the Living God, we have the privilege and responsibility of having open conversations with our Father; we petition and He responds. The thing that blows my mind is that somehow when we commune with God, we are the ones who benefit, not only from how He responds to us, but also by simply fellowshipping with our spiritual siblings in the presence of the Lord. I am consistently reminded of how valuable time in prayer really is. In times past, prayer has been the tool that made the earth remain still so the sun would continue to shine through the night, prayer stopped rain for three and a half years when Elijah asked and brought rain when he prayed for it to continue, and prayer still works today. Prayer is a gift for the body to experience greater unity and it tells the Lord that we are persistent about our requests. May our legacy be that we were a people who knew how to strive in prayer!
