Saturday Jan 25th 6:35am.. A NW-SE ridge of high pressure is currently located through Cape Breton and will continue to slide away to the east today, meanwhile a low pressure system will be approaching from the west and is expected to pass north of the Maritimes. This storm will track should ensure a rain event for the southern Maritimes including PEI and a snow event for northern and NB. Very strong southerly winds are also expected to develop tonight ahead of the system allowing temperatures to climb +4 by dawn Sunday morning . An arctic cold front will then sweep across the region later Sunday morning bringing an end to the brief warm-up with temps expected to fall to -18 by late Sunday night as a fast moving ridge of high pressure crosses the region. The ridge should crest over the island on Monday morning then Another low pressure system will then track across the Maritimes Monday afternoon/evening. Right now The track of this system is expected to be across northern NB which makes the rain vs snow decision quite tricky. For now will go with a mix of both until more data is available. At any rate, this system moves away to the east Monday/Tuesday morning. Cold air will then flood into the Maritimes for Tuesday through Thursday. Precipitation..Flurries should begin this evening changing to periods of rain overnight ending early Sunday morning giving amounts in the 10 mm range. Rain or snow should begin with the second system Monday evening lasting for a few hours. rainfall/snowfall should be less than 5 mms/cms. Generally dry conditions expected through mid week. Temperatures.. Couple of quick roller coaster type events with temps over the next 48 hours with temps currently at -16 rising to +1 by mid evening then to +4 by tomorrow dawn. Tempos then falling to -18 by tomorrow night only to recover to +3 by Monday night. Temps will then fall to -10 by dawn Tuesday morning and basically remain in the -12/-18 range though Thursday. Temps should then moderate to seasonal normals beginning on Friday. Wind.. Strong southerly winds expected to develop tonight peaking between 10pm and 2 am with gusts to 80 KMH possible then begin to diminish towards dawn on Sunday.
