Saturday, January 18 Go from “them” to “us” Catholic Worker cofounder Dorothy Day once said you start by loving the poor for Jesus but soon love them for themselves. Her insight shows how what might begin as doing nice things for poor people on weekends to get your social justice activity points can lead to genuine love and solidarity. Bringing good news to the lives of those poor in body and spirit actually challenges you to risk a personal relationship with them, not only see them as objects of your Christian charity. And to do that means doing something many people these days fear more than anything: becoming vulnerable to others, especially to their weakness—and therefore your own. Today’s readings: 1 Samuel 9:1-4, 17-19; 10:1; Mark 2:13-17 (310). “Some . . . saw . . . Jesus . . . and said to his disciples, ‘Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ ”
