Saturday, June 15, 2013: Wildflowers of Lower Dark Canyon Trail: Earlier this week Carole Scurlock walked part of the Dark Canyon Trail and the Mt. Lukens fire road, and found superb wildflowers. Thus at short notice we have this Saturday chapter outing to see these flowers before they are gone. We’ll cover only a portion of Dark Canyon Trail, from where it begins on Angeles Crest Highway to its intersection with the Mt. Lukens fire road, and maybe part of the fire road, a distance of little more than a mile each way, with an elevation gain of approximately 500 feet. This part of the trail currently has abundant displays of pitcher sage (a CNPS 4.2, limited distribution, rare plant), woolly blue curls, showy penstemon, heartleaf keckiella, rose snapdragon, prickly phlox, and numerous others. Directions: From La Cañada Flintridge take Angeles Crest Highway (State Route 2) approximately 5 miles to mile marker (MM) 30.02, where we’ll meet at 9 a.m. This is where the Dark Canyon Trail begins. The parking area at that spot holds only about six cars. A much larger parking area is at MM 30.16. When walking back to MM 30.02, PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL because of traffic on the highway. These places have no amenities. The outing will last 2-3 hours.
