Tonight we feature another great influence on my understanding of what makes a set of lyrics great. Few individuals understood the soul of American popular music better than The Carter Family and very few could distill the essence of American verse into simple words and images better than A.P. Cater. Technically, many of these songs were already in the American folk song canon or were originally written in a different form by someone else. A.P. Carter knew how to alter and produce them for the American listening public and for that reason, they have become synonymous with his name and that of the Carter Family.. So many musicians have been influenced by The Carter Family and there are so many great covers of songs they made popular. Tonight however, we’re sticking to the pure, raw, unsynthesized, unmodulated and incomparable sound of the original, the one and only, Carter Family. Have a great weekend!
