Saturday, November 22 High Priest. Hebrews 1:1-6:12 In former days, God spoke through the prophets. In the latter days he spoke directly through His Son, Jesus Christ. That magnificent sermon that is the letter to the Hebrews was probably not penned by Paul. However, its author certainly had the same message as Paul. It may have originally been a number of separate homilies. The author quite plausibly sat at Paul’s or another apostle’s feet. This is the uniqueness of Hebrews. It made the canon despite its anonymity. We trust the early Church. That and its doctrinal correctness sufficed to facilitate its inclusion. Today’s reading ends on belief in a just God: through faith and patience, endure until you receive the inheritance. Sunday, November 23 Superiority. Hebrews 6:13-10:18 Portion two of our time in the epistle to the Hebrews begins, appropriately, with the promises of God. These find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who is a Priest far superior to those of old, in the manner of Melchizedek. He arbitrates a better covenant and is the One who offer a better sacrifice. He brings not a covering, but forgiveness.
