Saturday November 29 Dougies Daily Trivia In the final installment of our week long salute to Star Wars, we take a look at Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. All of the regulars are back for the final movie in the original trilogy. This was the first of the Star Wars movies that I got to see at the theaters when it was released in 1983. The other two, I watched on video. Luke and the Gang rescue Leia from Jabba the Hutt. They also unfreeze Han. They escape to the Planet of Endor and meet the Ewoks. Luke prepares for his final confrontation with Darth Vader after learning that he is his father. He wants to know if he is truly evil, or is there some good left in him. Luke is taken aboard Death Star II, and faces off with Vader in a lightsaber duel at the Emperors urging. Meanwhile, Han and Leia lead the Rebel attack against the Empire back on Endor. Todays question: At the beginning of the movie, when Leia is Jabbas prisoner, why is she in such a skimpy outfit? Answer: Fisher had complained about her costumes being too long in the first two films. She told George Lucas that no one could tell shes a woman. So they gave her the skimpier attire, but ended up doing several re-takes due to wardrobe malfunctions. OTHER FUN STAR WARS EPISODE VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI FACTS: The movie was originally called Revenge of the Jedi. There were even posters made with that title. (One even showed up on an episode of Pawn Stars.) George Lucas decided at the last minute that since the Jedis are supposed to be the good guys, that revenge wouldnt be a proper emotion for them. So the name was changed to Return of the Jedi. It took six people to operate the Jabba the Hutt puppet. The puppet weighed over 2,000 pounds and cost the production company $500,000 to build it. Although he appeared in the previous movie, this is the first one that Boba Fett is mentioned by name. Originally, Yoda was not going to be in the movie. George Lucas consulted with a psychologist, and he suggested that they needed to have someone Luke trusts tell him that what Vader said about being his father is true. Otherwise, everyone in the audience is just going to assume Vader is lying. Even James Earl Jones, who does the voice of Darth Vader, assumed he was lying until he read the script for this movie. This was the only movie in the original trilogy to mention the name, Anakin Skywalker. The Ewoks are not mentioned by name. There are actually four actors that play Darth Vader in the movie. David Prowse is the man in the suit during the first half of the movie, Bob Anderson is in the suit for the lightsaber duel, Sebastian Shaw is in the suit for the unmasking, and James Earl Jones does the voice. Ian McDiarmid originally was just going to be the physical performer for the Emperor. He convinced Lucas to give him a chance, because he could do a more wicked and demonic voice than Clive Revill. McDiarmid impressed Lucas and Steve Spielberg so much, that he was allowed to both the physical and vocal performances. Han tells Leia, I love you. She responded, I know. It was a parallel of their conversation near the ended of The Empire Strikes Back. Harrison Ford pitched an idea to George Lucas about Han dying a noble death saving his friends in the end. Lucas rejected the idea, because he wanted the big three (Luke, Han, and Leia) all to survive. George Lucas was worried about the ending leaking out. So they gave out fake scripts to certain cast members that were suspected of being the leakers. Sure enough, some of the fake endings were put out there. George Lucas angered many Star Wars fans with the 2004 DVD release of Return of the Jedi. In the scene near the end, Luke sees three ghosts Obi Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and Anakin. In the original version, the Anakin he sees is played by Sebastian Shaw (the man in the Vader suit when he takes the mask off). In the DVD version, the Anakin he sees is Hayden Christensen, who played the role in the prequels. Lucas did this as a way of connecting the prequels to the original trilogy. The fans felt he should have left this part alone. To tie in with the movie, C3PO, R2D2, and the Ewoks briefly had their own Saturday morning cartoon show.
