Saturday Soap Box: Servers and Waitstaff There is no excuse for everyone not to know that most (not all, but most) servers, waitstaff, busers, and some hosts do not get minimum wage (even though there are laws in place that are supposed to make sure of it). When you go to a restaurant, YOU ARE PAYING FOR THE FOOD, NOT THE SERVER. A SERVERS LEGAL MINIMUM WAGE IS $2.13 PER HOUR. I understand that we pay for services in many areas and dont feel the need to leave tips, nurses, auto mechanics, etc. BUT, servers do not offer a service in the same sense or get compensated the same. Servers do MORE than write down your order and give it to the cook. They are SERVING YOU, as would a butler, or MAID...taking care of you, cleaning up after you and your kids (who leave messes), coming into contact with your germs and sicknesses (because THAT doesnt keep them from going out), catering to you, receiving and handling YOUR BAD ATTITUDE, BAD WEEK, or behaviors BECAUSE YOURE HUNGRY or INDECISIVE or not happy with what YOU ASKED FOR, trying to keep you happy, and in a lot of cases, trying to entertain you all at the same time. And that doesnt include the other WORK they do, like polishing your silverware, cleaning walls and shelves, dusting, and sometimes doing dishes. BUT, SERVERS DO NOT COOK YOUR FOOD! They may make salads and dip soups, but thats where it ends. WHEN YOUR FOOD IS BAD, its not always the servers fault, but theyre the face you see and the people you take it out on. Do not mistake what you pay for the food, cooks, and restaurant overhead for a servers wage. SERVERS WORK FOR TIPS...BOTTOM LINE. And MOST SERVERS HAVE TO PAY OUT OF THEIR TIPS ALSO. Sometimes, restaurants even take the CREDIT CARD FEE from servers tips when you pay with a credit card so they can keep the . I am not saying that a servers poor service demands a 20% tip, but you dont generally refuse to pay your mechanic fees when you drive away and still hear a grinding sound. They tell you that something else is the cause. And you accept that. Think if you were paid based on how much you smiled, no matter how people treated you, and based on how lousy your boss week was, instead of on whether you completed your work or not. I KNOW WE WORK HARD FOR OUR MONEY. SO DO THEY. ITS NOT ABOUT BEING KIND, YET SERVERS LEGALLY ARE AT YOUR MERCY AND WORK FOR YOUR KINDNESS. WE MUST BE BETTER. WE ARE TO BE A BLESSING TO OTHERS, because WE ARE BLESSED. So, be blessed and have a GREAT DAY!
