Saturday was National Peacekeepers Day. Below is the statement I made on behalf of the Official Opposition: “Today, we join the Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association in honouring the tremendous contributions of the more than 125,000 Canadians who have served in international peacekeeping efforts over the past six decades. “It was 40 years ago today that nine Canadian peacekeepers lost their lives after their plane was shot down by a missile during a refuelling operation in the Middle East. We remember them, and the more than 100 other Canadians who have lost their lives on peacekeeping missions. We thank Canada’s peacekeepers for their courage and sacrifice, and for their contribution to international peace and security. “Canadians are proud of our peacekeeping tradition, and we welcome the opportunity to acknowledge these efforts. Canada can and should be playing an important role in peacekeeping worldwide, instead of the diminished role we have seen under the Harper government. “I invite you to take part in one of the many ceremonies taking place today in honour of Canadians who have participated, both past and present, in peacekeeping operations around the world.
