Satya made a mistake. Obviously what he said was ridiculous. And even though Ive only interacted with him a few times, I have no doubt hes bright enough to realize his statement was not just callous and insensitive but super wrong. I cant imagine how hard it is to suddenly be under that kind of scrutiny. Hes still relatively new in the role. The thing that worries me the most though is this: Microsoft is 40 years old. Microsoft is old enough to have shepherded female babies born after it was founded into VP roles in engineering. Saying that you believe in having women play a real role in our industry year after year feels empty when after 40 years you have almost nothing to show for it. The leaders of our industry have failed on this issue. Plain and simple. Theyve had enough time to make real systemic change in our educational system, and in their organizations. Whats the percentage of women engineering VPs at Microsoft? Apple? Facebook? The worst part of this is what it says about Microsofts chances. You dont start making great software that people fall in love with if you dont change the genetics that stopped you from doing it in the first place. With his tone, Satya has felt like an agent of change, but todays comment feels like the same old thing. :(
