Saudi Arabia and Qatar joined the West and NATO in condemning presidential elections in Syria because their jihadist and Qaeda armies have not prevailed. BTW, how many national elections ever happened in Saudi Arabia and Qatar that would make them experts on democracy and elections? Well, none of course. So when the so-called leading democracies end up in the same box with the most medieval despots, one would need to start rethinking received ideas about what is actually going on. In one case, we have oligarchy that allows elections provided that one of the two wings of the same party is guaranteed to win, in the other case we have rentier oligarchy that is already so enlightened and developed that elections is one the last things on its mind.
