Sauget, Illinois - located on the muddy banks of the Mississippi, - TopicsExpress

Sauget, Illinois - located on the muddy banks of the Mississippi, this scenic little village had a population of 259 as of the 2010 census, and before assuming the name Sauget, this village was incorporated under the name Monsanto in order to give the chemical company of the same name less regulatory oversight and more freedom to pollute the surrounding neighbourhoods and the Mississippi. Tonight we play at Pops, one of the better rock clubs in the land, weve been playing here since 1998 with such legends as (insert gratuitous name-dropping here). Its an interesting area, a square mile or so of asphalt and industry, and a slight contrast to my recent travels. We park out back next to the train tracks, where DJ Product tagged many a moving freight train over the years. Over yonder, past the dumpsters and in front of the smoke stacks is strip club #1. Off to the right is strip club #2 and apparently the burgers there are top notch. Strip club #3 is somewhere past the watch tower, between the Big River Zinc Corporation and the ethanol refinery. Cycling is hit or miss - when the wind is just right, the chemical plant fumes will burn your eyes and make your lungs hurt. I once rode through a country neighborhood past the chemical plant with run-down shacks everywhere and a surprising number Lexuss and Cadillacs in the driveways. A local told me I was lucky I didnt get shot going through that hood, so now I only ride the other direction. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is Sauget Illinois.
