Save Some Read 1 Corinthians 9:22 “Secure your oxygen - TopicsExpress

Save Some Read 1 Corinthians 9:22 “Secure your oxygen before assisting another”, “secure your rope before assisting another”, “secure your foothold before tossing a lifeline” are all messages of rescue training that can be applied to our seeking and saving of lost souls. It is true that you can’t rescue someone unless you are where they are, but you don’t become as they are in order to save them. Here’s what I mean. In high school, I nearly drown as a result of a misguided prank. As I plunged down and fought back to the surface of the lake time and time again, I feared that I would drown because I lacked the skill and knowledge of how to swim. I’m writing this so you know I lived, but how? It was because my friend possessed the knowledge of how to save me, ran to help me, but secured herself to the dock, and threw me a life ring. As I broke the surface exhausted and weary, the life ring came straight to me and I was rescued. To rescue someone safely and without the risk of losing both lives, you must first be certain that you have secured yourself. The dictionary defines “secure(ed)” as “firmly fixed”. This is Paul’s message too. Although this single verse taken out of full context can be misinterpreted as permission to be in sinful conditions and behaviors under the guise of saving souls, Paul’s message is that we while being “firmly fixed” in Christ, can seek to save those lost in the sea of sin and safely rescue them to the shore of God’s commands without losing our soul or theirs in the process. --Janet Watts, Kannapolis church of Christ
